Competition project in Bern, located in a housing area at the seemingly “dead end” of a street. The project accommodates 40 low-cost city apartments.
The main agenda responds to the need for compact yet high-quality living spaces, while minimizing the project’s impact on the surrounding context. The building is conceived as a mushroom-like structure: a concrete core anchors the project by punching into the ground, acting as the primary stabilizing element for a fully timber construction above.
The same core-and-ring principle organizes the spatial layout. From a massive staircase, residents pass through a tiled entrance zone before entering the warm, wooden living spaces. The outermost ring forms the outdoor space and buffer zone, functioning both as a structural element and as support for solar collectors and external planting.
